BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – With the first week of football in the books, the Olivet Nazarene University football team took home all three honors of the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest Player of the Week awards.
Evan Leake (special teams), Vaisen Viloria (defense), and Aaron Bennett collected the accolades for the Tigers after their season-opening 35-14 victory at Concordia (Mich.) Saturday.
Leake, from Mt. Vernon, Ill., returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter of Saturday's road win to give ONU a commanding lead. On the day, Leake racked up 113 yards for a 56.5 yards-per-return average. The senior back also rushed the ball 12 times for 75 yards and a score in the big win.
Viloria anchored the ONU defense that held Concordia, a team that averaged 33 points per game last season, scoreless through the first 43 minutes of play. The Hawaiian sophomore led ONU with eight tackles, registering four solo, and one tackle-for-loss.
Bennett, a native of Bronx, N.Y., had a big day on the gridiron to help the Tigers defeat Concordia (Mich.). The sophomore back gashed the Cardinals for 159 yards on just nine carries, highlighted by a 58-yard touchdown run that gave ONU a two-score lead in the second quarter.
