CHICAGO, Ill. - Olivet Nazarene University placed two athletes among the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference weekly men's volleyball honorees, as Tyler Van Laten (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Will Byers (Westfield, Ind.) were recognized by the league office on Wednesday.
Van Laten earned CCAC Defender of the Week honors for the second time this season after anchoring the Tigers' back row in a pair of conference victories. The sophomore defensive specialist averaged 2.75 digs per set and posted an impressive .939 reception percentage, successfully handling 46 of 49 serve-receive attempts.
Van Laten opened the week with a standout performance in a five-set win over St. Ambrose, collecting 18 digs while adding 37 receptions. He followed that effort with another steady showing against Trinity Christian, recording four digs and nine receptions in a straight-set victory.
Joining him in the weekly honors was teammate Will Byers, who captured his first CCAC Setter of the Week award. The junior setter guided the Tigers' offense with consistency, averaging 9.0 assists per set while also contributing 2.38 digs per set defensively.
Byers totaled 45 assists in the five-set win over St. Ambrose and added 27 assists in the three-set triumph against Trinity Christian. His all-around play was highlighted by a double-double against St. Ambrose, where he paired his assist total with 11 digs.
The strong performances from Van Laten and Byers helped Olivet Nazarene to a 2–0 week, improving the Tigers' record to 16–13 overall and 9–5 in CCAC play.
