BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Atjon Thaqi netted a pair of goals to lift the Olivet Nazarene University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over No. 16 Marian Wednesday evening at the Bahr Soccer Facility. It marks the first win for the Tigers over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 14 Lindsey Wilson in 2022.
ONU struck first with Thaqi scoring in the 2nd minute, assisted by Gijs Van Den Berg, setting an early tone for the home team. Despite several attempts, including a header from Kai Bucher at 35:40, they could not extend their lead, with Marian's goalkeeper Mateo Garcia-Galan making key saves. Marian equalized in the 27th minute through Samuel Wehaus, assisted by Joao Antonio Rocha, concluding a tense first half with both teams level at 1-1.
The home team began the second half with a strong offensive push, highlighted by consecutive corner kicks taken by Thaqi at 49:24 and 50:53. Despite several blocked shots from Bucher and Josh Dennis, they maintained pressure on the visitors. A pivotal moment came in the 81st minute when Marian's Diego Regueira received a red card, reducing their strength on the field. Shortly after, Thaqi capitalized on the opportunity and scored at 81:30, giving them a 2-1 lead. The half was marked by a series of fouls from both teams, but the hosts' persistence and strategic play secured their advantage.
Thaqi recorded two goals for the home team, including the game-winner, while taking three shots, all on target. Van Den Berg contributed with an assist, enhancing the team's attacking efforts. Cedric Kunzli made two saves, allowing only one goal over 90 minutes, providing stability in the defensive line. Bucher and Ali Sillah each registered two shots, with one shot on goal, adding pressure in the attacking third.
With the win, Olivet Nazarene improves to 2-0-1 on the season. They will hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Bethel Saturday afternoon.
