DAVENPORT, Iowa – The Olivet Nazarene University men's soccer team continued its perfect start to the conference slate with a 3-1 victory over St. Ambrose Tuesday night at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex.
The first half began with Olivet Nazarene showing offensive initiative, marked by multiple attempts to break through St. Ambrose's defense. Kingsley Kanu and Atjon Thaqi led the early efforts with shots that narrowly missed the target. Despite being caught offside several times, the Tigers maintained pressure, with Daniel Martinez and Ali Sillah forcing saves from the St. Ambrose goalkeeper Dawson Yegge.
As the half progressed, the Tigers continued to press, highlighted by Nathan Schmidli's high shot and Matteus Valone's blocked attempt. The visiting team was unable to capitalize on a late corner kick opportunity. The first half concluded with the score remaining level at 0-0, as both teams failed to convert their chances into goals.
Olivet Nazarene opened the second half strongly, with Thaqi scoring in the 46th minute to put the team ahead. The momentum continued as Martinez extended the lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute, assisted by Kanu following a corner kick.
The Tigers maintained their offensive pressure, and Noa Norton added a third goal in the 72nd minute, assisted by Adrian Kang Hagman. Despite a late goal by the Fighting Bees' Narnnam Kongsappaisa in the 87th minute, the Tigers finished the half with a decisive 3-1 advantage, securing the win.
Norton scored one goal on his only shot attempt, which was on target. Thaqi also found the back of the net, scoring once from four total shots, three of which were on goal. Martinez contributed a goal as well, with his three shots resulting in two on target, including the game-winning goal. Cedric Kunzli, playing in goal, recorded four saves, all in the second half, while maintaining a clean sheet.
The Tigers improved to 7-2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. They will travel to Calumet Saturday to take on the Crimson Wave at 10 a.m.
